How screening varies in Idaho
There is no universal "felony-friendly" certification. Screening policies differ by property and management company. This page does not make claims about state or local law; confirm a property’s current requirements directly before applying.
Idaho resources
Idaho Housing and Finance Association statewide renter guide (reviewed 2026-09-28): IHFA's https://www.idahohousing.com/renters/ directs renters to https://housingidaho.com/, a free, searchable statewide rental website with landlord- and manager-posted listings and a Spanish-language option.
These are search leads, not apartments owned or verified by IHFA; confirm any listed rent, availability, landlord, screening and application fee directly. IHFA also offers renter counseling and links to homelessness access points. Its homebuyer loans are not rentals.
Housing Choice Vouchers: https://www.idahohousing.com/renters/rental-assistance/ says IHFA administers tenant-based vouchers for 34 of Idaho's 44 counties. Eligible participants generally contribute about 30% of adjusted income to rent/utilities, and may find qualifying homes from independent landlords; a voucher is not an available apartment or guaranteed landlord approval.
The page describes four branch-area waiting lists, with waits ranging from several months to more than two years. For areas IHFA serves, it links the no-cost online application https://rentalassistanceportal-idahohousing.securecafe.com/onlineleasing/idaho-live/guestlogin.aspx or a paper application through the appropriate branch office; do not submit duplicate paper applications to multiple IHFA offices.
Important service-area exceptions: IHFA says it does not administer HCV for Ada County (Boise City/Ada County Housing Authorities, https://bcacha.org/), the city of Pocatello (Housing Alliance & Community Partnerships, https://www.pocatello.gov/272/Housing-Alliance), or Adams, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, Valley and Washington counties (SICHA, https://sicha.org/Public/Section8Vouchers/WaitingList.htm).
Apply through those authorities for their areas instead of using IHFA's voucher form. The Pocatello city exception is not stated as a county-wide exclusion.
IHFA HCV screening only: https://www.idahohousing.com/renters/rental-assistance/ says HUD income and other eligibility rules apply; lifetime state sex-offender registration is ineligible. It says drug-related or violent criminal acts are reviewed case by case and lists possible ineligibility for prior public-housing eviction, money owed to a housing authority or federal-housing fraud.
This is not a blanket approval for any felony, and IHFA's voucher policy is not automatically the screening policy of a landlord, an IHFA-financed development or another housing authority. Ask the relevant office and property for current written criteria.
Choose the IHFA branch serving the destination county; https://www.idahohousing.com/renters/rental-assistance/ has the current county lists and downloadable English/Spanish paper applications. Coeur d'Alene branch: Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai and Shoshone; 915 W Canfield, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83815, (208) 762-5113.
Idaho Falls branch: Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Caribou, Clark, Custer, Franklin, Fremont, Jefferson, Lemhi, Madison, Oneida, Power and Teton; 1235 Jones St, Idaho Falls, ID 83401, (208) 522-6002. Lewiston branch: Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis and Nez Perce; 2338 Nez Perce Dr, Lewiston, ID 83501, (208) 743-0251.
Twin Falls branch: Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka and Twin Falls; 841 Meadows Dr Suite 100, Twin Falls, ID 83301, (208) 734-8531. These are branch offices, not addresses of available units.
Referral-only help: https://www.idahohousing.com/renters/rental-assistance/ says certain Mainstream DFN/MRR vouchers for eligible non-elderly people with disabilities require referrals through coordinated-entry access points or Idaho Health and Welfare, not the ordinary public application.
For current questions see https://www.idahohousing.com/about/contact-us/; IHFA lists (208) 331-4700 for its Boise rental-assistance main office. Reviewed 2026-09-28; verify program intake and property details before relying on dated online information.
A practical next step
Preparing your application
A little preparation can help you ask better questions before paying an application fee.
- Gather proof of income (recent pay stubs, an offer letter, or bank statements).
- Collect positive references from prior landlords or employers where possible.
- Prepare a brief, honest explanation letter that provides context for your record.
- Ask each property directly about its reported screening policy before paying any application fee.
- Confirm the lookback period and which offense types a property may consider.

Frequently asked questions
What do the screening and verification statuses mean on Idaho listings?
A listing's screening status describes the policy reported for that property, while its verification status describes the status of that information. Check both, along with any verification date, and contact the property directly because policies can change.
Are all Idaho listings verified?
No. Unverified records may be publicly visible. Each listing displays its verification status, and a verification date appears when one is available.
Does a listing in Idaho guarantee approval?
No. A listing is not a promise of acceptance. Screening policies and decisions are made by each property; contact it directly to confirm its current requirements before applying.
Where can I find state-specific guidance for Idaho?
If state guidance or resources are provided on this page, review them below. This page is informational only and does not determine how a property's screening policy applies to you.
